Changing lives

at all stages

Working alongside children to develop resilience, confidence and joy in their childhood journey.

ABOUT JOANIE

Joanie has run a successful children's home, raised her own children and has over 25 years' experience working with children's charities and in advocacy. She works directly with individuals, families or with groups in schools. She has worked in collaboration with education authorities and health services, delivering training to colleagues, and also to teachers and care professionals.

THE ETHOS

Joanie believes in the basic goodness and strength of children, meeting them where they are, not where they think people expect them to be. Children are born trusting, honest and intuitive but sometimes because of circumstances they become unhappy or display difficult behaviour.
Joanie believes that every child can be trusted to navigate their path back towards their original birthright of joy and strength.

THE APPROACH

Providing a presence beyond the emotion and turmoil of the circumstance, Joanie offers serene listening and the skill for the young person to engage in simple basic reflection. There is then the opportunity for the child to genuinely move forward. She accompanies individuals as they make sense of where they are with friends, family and in the wider world, describing this as 'helping us return to our factory settings’. She works with individuals and groups, in person or online.

Outcomes

Joanie works to support these outcomes for both children and professionals working with children

CONFIDENCE

Having confidence in ourselves, quietly believing in the possibility that we can attempt and very probably succeed in what we set out to do.

RESILIENCE

Bouncing back to who we truly are – no labels – just the pure essence of who we are inside and what makes us the people that we are.

HOPE

Hope linked with optimism is always a strong predictor of wellbeing.

TRUST

Trust in ourselves and in others. Learning how to depend on and believe in peers, adults and care givers. Trust is the foundation of relationships because it allows us to be vulnerable and open, restoring, repairing and helping us feel secure.

LOVE

Love – care, commitment, knowledge, responsibility, respect, and trust. Love is an action, never simply a feeling.

SELF-EFFICACY

‘I can do this myself’ – positive predictor of wellbeing. Self-efficacy is our belief in our ability to succeed in a particular situation. Such beliefs play a role in determining how we think, behave, and feel.

Testimonials

Joanie is simply magical - and I've heard many people describe her in the same way. She has worked with me on a number of projects and she's always such a joy to work with - she sees the goodness and potential in every person she meets - including children, teenagers, parents and workers.

Dr Wendy Simpson,Health Psychologist, NHS Fife

I've observed Joanie's special kind of magic with children, care-givers and a range of colleagues. She brings calm, serenity , peace and joy wherever she goes. At Children 1st she has been brilliant at getting alongside children, building trust, confidence and a sense of safety and wellbeing, inspiring our teams to completely believe the children were ultimately fine and we adults just needed to believe in them .

Mary GlasgowCEO, Children 1st

We find that our pupils are more likely to return to mainstream after the work you do with them and they do so confident in their own ability to succeed. That is such a big thing.

It’s cool doing this stuff with you. I am really looking forward to the rest of my life now.

Eliza15 year-old-girl suffering from anxiety

I have witnessed first hand Joanie's ability to gain the trust of children and young people.
She does this by making them feel safe, listened to and valued for who they are.
A compassionate presence, an open heart and a belief in the untapped wisdom of children makes her approach unique.
Young people find their own path, strengthened and more equipped for the road ahead by spending time in her presence.

You approach the child from a holistic point of view and say ‘who is this child?’ ‘what is their potential?’ You helped us communicate as a family and let him see that he had people who loved and supported him. He is happily settled now, as a result.
